Symptoms
of Depression
When
life's problems get you down, you may begin to wonder if you are
depressed or merely in a slump. With the feelings being the same, it is
often hard to differentiate between a bad period and depression. The
symptoms of depression tend to last longer and are often more critical
than being upset over a bad grade. When the feelings of apathy just
will not go away, it may be a start to consider that you are clinically
depressed.
But before you book yourself a doctor's appointment, you will want to
know what depression looks like. Knowing the signs and symptoms of
depression will help you decide whether or not an appointment is
warranted. It will also help you start understand what is wrong with
you and working towards a solution.
There is not one person that does not have their own ups and downs; it
is not wrong to be sad or upset in reaction to life's little hiccups.
It is not even wrong to get depressed, but it can have an adverse
effect on your family and friends. If the slump that you are in does
not go away, then you may be suffering from clinical depression.
Some symptoms of depression are not just the average blues. Someone who
is depressed will have overwhelming feelings of hoplessness and
worthlessness. They have a loss in interest in things that they used to
love; nothing is pleasureable for someone who is depressed. Some think
that they can eat away their woes or starve them even. This can cause
significant weight loss or gain. Insomnia or even hypersomnia
(oversleeping) are also noted in people with clinical depression.
Self-loathing is a major aspect of depression. Not only is someone
diagnosed with depression already in a slump, but they start to beat
down on themselves for not being able to overcome it. They seem to
magnify their faults and mistakes such that they begin to feel guilty
or have feelings of worthlessness. This can also contribute to the
irribility that someone with depression experiences. They have
outbursts and are often easily annoyed.
The symptoms of depression range from both mood and attitude changes to
physical changes as well. What some people may perceive as a depressed
person may actually be someone who is just going through a rough patch
in their life. Knowing the symptoms of depression can help you know
early on if you are depressed or not.
